The Caliber Institute

  • Director Charlton Brynner, a clockwork human who was the ‘mortal’ signatory of the Inside Accords
  • Penelope Brynner, the director’s deceased granddaughter and spectral cybersecurity officer
  • Cepheus, a Minotaur HR manager fond of cheerful neckties. Emva’s husband.
  • Emva, a Goblin artificer and the head of R&D. Fond of baking. Bad at baking. Cepheus’ wife.
  • Morta, the Institute’s resident Fate. Resides below the building.
  • Cimimi, a somewhat nervous Mimic, and the Institute’s Treasurer.
  • Anasios Kojak, former field agent, now retired to ‘desk work’ as the Lake District containment facility’s Warden.
  • Dr. Park Ji-Young, the Institute’s foremost specialist in Auditors. Human, in her 60’s, and utterly lacking patience for anyone except her dog, Onnuri.

The Angelic

  • Adagio, sub rosa monster hunter and Laniakea’s (much) better half. Has a facility for being late.
  • Mysterioso ‘Myst’ Pizzicato, imprisoned in the Caliber Institute’s containment site in the Lake District, for the assassination of Infernal Kings. Another pair of wings covers her eyes. Her ‘facility’ is unknown.
  • Caesura, physically imposing and quite brusque. Part of Benzene’s heist crew. Has a facility for breaking things.
  • Chiasme, blue-skinned and beautiful. Her facility is Neutral Grounds, a café for Outsiders.

The Draconic

  • Laniakea, an Ancient Green Dragon, doomsday artifact collector, and CEO of a private-equity firm. Her hoard is one of doomsday artifacts.
  • Mr. Pyrite, an Ancient Gold Dragon, Judge in the Middlemarch legal system, and broker for much of the Outside Underworld. Hoard is of ‘True Names’.
  • Eta Carinae, a Young Red Dragon; an upstart that the rest of draconic society doesn’t really like. Formerly clashed with Laniakea and was left alive, though with a tooth removed. His hoard is of eyes.
  • Merensky, an Ancient Platinum Dragon. Thought of as odd by other dragons as, despite her incredible power, she mostly keeps to herself in a horology museum in Upton. Hoard is, appropriately, of clockwork.
  • Facula, a Young White Dragon. She’s only just chosen her hoard topic, which is flame, stored via ensorcelled candles.
  • Roche, an Adult Black Dragon. One of the owners of Neutral Grounds, a coffee shop catering to Outsiders. Big antlers. More “Eastern” in his full form.

The Infernal

  • Azoth Alkahest, a shadow Demon with unionist sensibilities. Can ‘taste’ if a person or object is ‘relevant’, whatever that means. Lives with Ursa now!
  • Panacea ‘Pan’ Alkahest, Alkahest’s sister. Holds similar opinions to her brother – the Infernal Hierarchy should be dismantled – but with a wildly different approach. She’s suddenly back in the game after a long absence.
  • Rembra, a Devil; former employer of Merlin and all-around miscreant. Can sense the presence of nearby wealth.
  • Strych Novem, a smoke Demon and erstwhile partner of Alkahest. Expert in artifacts and the occult. Can feel vibrations when something of great power appears within 10 miles of them.
  • Erabu, a Marilith and highly-regarded Demonic general. A friend of Ursa’s.
  • Draisine, a Chain Devil, former bounty hunter, now retired and owns a bicycle shop. Friend of Nora’s.
  • Benzene Petcoke, heist mastermind. Charismatic in a piece-of-shit kind of way. Talks like a salesman. Can piggyback on the senses of others he’s spent at least an hour with, seeing what they see.
  • Amyll Coreggio, incubus, fabricator. Friendly and self-assured. Can smell how old things are.
  • Phency, a Nightmare. The driver for Benzene’s heist, formerly one of Vic Sulph’s crew. Twitchy and erratic. Can hear if something is flammable. Out for vengeance.
  • Miasma, seven-eyed, fat, gorgeous. Will refer to you as ‘sweetheart’. She can see colours like a shrimp. It’s not very useful.

The Fae

  • Queen Titania, Ruler of the Summer Court and one of the two most powerful Fae in any world.
  • Montparnasse, a Fae of the Summer Court (formerly Winter) with psionic abilities and emerald green teeth. Killed by Alkahest. Found to be a traitor, working for Lopodite.
  • Cait-Síth, a talking cat and investigator into Summer Court murders. Archetype of the ‘Relentless Investigator’.
  • Minette, Fae of the Winter Court and Laniakea’s former PA. Currently working for Mr. Pyrite, having changed her Archetype from ‘Beleaguered Assistant’ to ‘Hypercompetent Secretary’.
  • Bianca, a pixie tattoo artist. Runs her own studio, with a variety of other artists on the smaller side of things.
  • Elene, a Rabbitfolk lawyer in the Summer Court. Ursa’s defense in the Trial. Archetype of ‘Bunny-ears lawyer’.
  • Mrs. Levitt, a sweet old lady with an orange shawl. Has her own motives. Archetype of ‘Meddling Old Woman’.
  • Portia, running the archetype of ‘The Don’. She owns a towerblock filled with luxury flats, and shops and businesses on the bottom floors. She insists every day is the day of her daughter’s wedding. She does not have a daughter.

The Unaligned

  • The Morris Worm, sentient computer virus and Nora’s ‘Patron’. Hosted on a server contained in the Caliber Institute’s Lake District facility.
  • Lopodite, the Tenth Muse – the Muse of Crime. The future will belong to those who stand beside her.

Player Character Family

  • Ella Helton, Nora’s sister and a PA. Recently became an Auditor after being employed by Laniakea, but the mantle didn’t kill her.
  • Imrus Carpenter, Ursa’s father. A skilled, intricate craftsman despite his massive size. Hopelessly romantic. Lost an arm.
  • Sarolt Carpenter, Ursa’s mother. Grounded and industrious, with a head for business. Former Caliber Institute agent (technically still employed there).
  • Adrienn Carpenter, Ursa’s oldest sister. The family favourite. Does not get on with Ursa.
  • Panna Carpenter, Ursa’s second oldest sibling. Chillest of Ursa’s family. Writes poetry.
  • Zente Carpenter, Ursa’s brother (Edvin’s twin). Outdoorsman. Flighty, but acceptably so.
  • Edvin Carpenter, Ursa’s brother (Zente’s twin). Basically an accountant. Likes gacha games.
  • Albar Fizzlethread, Merlin’s father. A bus mechanic. Dry sense of humour. Goes by ‘Al Williams’ in mundane society.
  • Faeyore Fizzlethread, Merlin’s mother. A landscape gardener. Has a picture of her son in a locket she never takes off. Goes by ‘Fae Williams’ in mundane society.

Unaffiliated Humans

  • Stiletto Benevolent, an Occult Detective and former Institute employee. Known as something of a conspiracy theorist; obsessed with Lopodite.
  • Ben Johnson, Merlin’s roommate. Unaware of the Outside, he just thinks Merlin is a short computer guy. Was actually the first to call Merlin ‘Merlin’.
  • Agent Edelweiss, with the USA’s Blue Chamber. Short and with a bit of a temper.
  • Agent Blackball, with the USA’s Blue Chamber. Freakishly tall, and wields a katana. Nobody has seen his face on account of the 8-Ball helmet he always wears.
