Floodwall, a multi-planar homebrew game of D&D

Floodwall was a game I ran spanning levels 1-20, over the course of about two and a half years. It began as a ‘last city in a flooded world’ setting, but soon grew into a multi-planar adventure about the fall of an immortal oligarchy.

The City of Floodwall

Floodwall was a massive tower of a city, built around a central spire. It was separated into seven tiers, with the better-off higher up, and safer from the rising tides. Luckily for everyone else, the tide only comes in once every few weeks – though it’s been getting more frequent in the months preceding the game.

Officially, the reason the City was able to keep itself standing was thanks to the power of its Immortal Royals, a group of eight Tieflings that ruled the city. Of course, that was just good publicity.

Tier 1: The Sewers. The city’s twisting intestines, mostly man-made but connected with weird, ancient catacombs at points. A dangerous place to live, but sometimes needs must.

Tier 2: The Slums. Submerged almost every time the tide comes in. Most abodes are designed to float, because it’s hard to keep things waterproof. The people here lead an almost nomadic life as a result.

Tier 3: The Forest. The majority of agriculture is in a ring hung around the city’s midsection, suspended by massive vines and bridges. The lower half of the tier obviously floods more often, so is more of a marsh than a forest.

Tier 4: The Residential tier. The lowest ‘official’ tier for homes. Hasn’t been submerged in years. It’s also the heart of commerce in the city.

Tier 5: The Church tier. The tier with the most space, it’s the home of all official Church property and administrative offices. And it’s where the immortal Royals that rule the city make public appearances.

Tier 6: The Privileged tier. This is the tier you live on if you’re unfathomably wealthy. It’s mostly mansions and private grounds. There’s also a huge tower that the Royal Mavi uses to broadcast announcements.

Tier 7: The Royal Palace. Less a tier and more a big floating castle. This is where the Royals live!

Our Player Characters

Firuzeh, a Tiefling Sea Sorcerer. Uzi for short. Grew up alone in the sewers, picking up all the social graces one might expect as a result. The mystery of her parentage and why she grew up in the sewers, considering the only other Tieflings in Floodwall were the Royals themselves, was quite close to her heart.

Cranzalar, a Dragonborn Cleric, then Warlock, then Eldritch Knight. Raised by the Church to be a guard, but with frequent visions of a deity of Storms, outside of the Royals. Saw the Church’s true colours after joining with Vi and Uzi.

Verischa Moonclaw, an Elven Druid from another plane. Vi for short. More woodsy and spiritual than the rest of her warrior-clan family, Vi found her way to Floodwall through a stable portal. From there, she’d frequently return with food and medical supplies for the city’s downtrodden.

Anyway it was a really fun game that I look back on really fondly. And I’m very lucky to have such a fantastic group to run games for!
